HRCI groups its credentials into three tiers named for what you do, not how long you’ve done it: Knowledge, Professional and Strategic. Read that way, the range stops looking like a menu of acronyms and starts looking like a career path.
The Three Tiers
| Tier | Credential | Who it’s designed for |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | aPHR | People starting their HR journey or exploring a path into the field |
| Professional | PHR | HR professionals implementing programs and supporting day-to-day operations |
| Strategic | SPHR | Leaders who shape HR strategy and policy and align people practices with business goals |
What Each Tier Tests
The aPHR builds foundational knowledge you can apply right away. The PHR validates technical and operational HR knowledge, including US laws and regulations. The SPHR moves from doing the work to steering it: strategy, policy and organizational direction.
Choosing Your Rung
Match the tier to your actual work. If your week is mostly running programs and processes, that’s Professional territory. If you’re setting the direction those programs follow, that’s Strategic. HRCI also publishes guidance on understanding professional-level experience, worth reading before you decide where you fall.
Outside the US
Each tier has an international counterpart for practitioners outside the United States. Our piece on HRCI’s international certifications explains the difference.
