SHRM Certification Eligibility: Do You Qualify for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP?

Already know whether your work is operational or strategic? Good — this post is the reference page for the actual numbers: exactly what SHRM requires before it lets you sit for SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. If you haven’t yet worked out which exam matches your day-to-day role, our piece on SHRM-CP vs SHRM-SCP covers that first.

Checklist for reviewing certification eligibility criteria

SHRM-CP: The Exact Requirements

  • No degree required
  • No previous HR experience required
  • No HR job title required

SHRM-SCP: The Exact Requirements

You need to meet exactly one of these three paths:

  1. Three years of strategic-level HR work
  2. Three years holding SHRM-CP while working in, or moving toward, strategic-level work
  3. Strategic HR work totaling 1,000+ hours per calendar year

Common Questions on the Fine Print

Does eligibility need to hold at exam time or application time? Application time. You must meet the criteria when you apply, not when you eventually sit for the exam.

What if my eligibility looks borderline? SHRM may request a job description to verify your work meets the strategic threshold — have one ready if you’re applying for SHRM-SCP on the hours-based path.

Can I apply for the wrong one by mistake and just switch? Better to get it right the first time — eligibility gets checked at application, so confirm your path before you pay for an application.
